چکیده

Epeolus, Coelioxys, Cephalic Secretions, Pyrazines, Spiroacetals Volatile cephalic secretions from females of four cleptoparasitic bee species, Epeolus cruciger (Pz.), E. variegatus, (L.) (Anthophoridae) and Coelioxys (Coelioxys) quadridentata (L.), C. (Schizocoelioxys) mandibularis Nyl. (Megachilidae) were analysed by combined gas chromatog raphy/mass spectroscopy. There are considerable similarities between the two species within each genus, and also some qualitative correspondences between the two genera. The Epeolus species contain spiroacetals, 2-alkanols and pyrazines while the Coelioxys species contain spiroacetals, 3-alkanols and 3-ketones along with unsaturated alcohols. Two of the spiroacetals are first found in nature.

Comparative Notes on the Biology and Development of Epeolus compactus Cresson., a Cleptoparasite of Colletes kincaidii Cockerell (Hymenoptera: Anthophoridae, Colletidae)

The biology of the nomadine bee, Epeolus compactus Cresson, is described based on composite notes taken from field, laboratory, and greenhouse studies of the host bee, Colletes kincaidii Cockerell. Details of Epeolus egg deposition are described and compared with other known noma dine bees. We document the release of a glandular secretion during egg deposition by E. compactus which dissolves th...

Pheromone Bouquet of the Mandibular Glands in Andrena haemorrhoa F. (Hym., Apoidea)

Andrena, Mandibular Glands, Pheromone, Spiroacetals The complex volatile secretion from the mandibular glands of Andrena haemorrhoa (Hym., Apoidea) has been analysed by GC/MS. It is composed primarily of three groups of compounds: 1. Spiroacetals of five different systems: two l,6-dioxyspiro[4.4]nonanes, four l,6-dioxaspiro[4.5] decanes, two l,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecanes, one l,6-dioxaspiro[4.6]...

Dynamics of a Host-Cleptoparasite Relationship: Holcopasites ruthae as a Parasite of Calliopsis pugionis (Hymenoptera: Anthophoridae, Andrenidae)

Holcopasites ruthae Cooper is a cleptoparasite of Calliopsis pugionis Cockerell. At five sites, parasitism rate of host cells varied from 0 to over 30%, with an overall parasitism rate of 6.6% when data from all sites were combined. Significant influences on parasitism rate included site, nest density, and date of excavation, and density had a significant interaction with date. Together these f...

The novel signal peptides, pedibin and Hym-346, lower positional value thereby enhancing foot formation in hydra.

Signaling molecules affecting patterning processes are usually proteins and rarely peptides. Two novel peptides, pedibin and Hym-346, that are closely related to one another have been isolated from Hydra vulgaris and Hydra magnipapillata. Several experiments indicate that both cause a reduction in the positional value gradient, the principle patterning process governing the maintenance of form ...

Hym-301, a novel peptide, regulates the number of tentacles formed in hydra.

Hym-301 is a peptide that was discovered as part of a project aimed at isolating novel peptides from hydra. We have isolated and characterized the gene Hym-301, which encodes this peptide. In an adult, the gene is expressed in the ectoderm of the tentacle zone and hypostome, but not in the tentacles. It is also expressed in the developing head during bud formation and head regeneration. Treatme...
